Fantastic Images of Fauna, Flora and Protected Areas of the Asia-Pacific Region

At EcoPhotography.org, we bring to you some of the best photographs of animals and plants from countries across Asia, Australasia and the Pacific. Many of the mammals, marsupials, birds, reptiles, amphibians, spiders, insects, flowers and plants you discover on this website are endangered and at risk of extinction. Others are regarded as common, although the increasingly rapid rate of habitat destruction in many countries in the region means that even species that are today regarded as plentiful can soon become threatened. It is hoped that through this website people can be inspired to do whatever they can on a personal level to help protect the fast diminishing pockets of virgin wilderness still remaining.

This website can be used for a variety of purposes, such as species identification, destination research, ecotravel preparation, school and university assignments, and, of course, just for viewing pleasure!

Fauna & Flora Indexes

To make this website as user-friendly as possible, and with the non-scientific community in mind, we have created different indexes for the same category. For example, Birds can be searched for via an alphabetical list of common names, or an alphabetical list of scientific names. With common names, we have listed them alphabetically according to the actual name, rather than the 'type' name. Therefore, Hume's Pheasant would be found under 'H' for 'Hume's', not 'P' for 'Pheasant'. For scientific names, rather than follow the standard scientific classification of species by Order, Family, Genus, etc., we have stuck to a simple alphabetically arranged list, so Hume's Pheasant would be found under 'S' for Syrmaticus humiae. Due to the special interest in the butterflies and moths of the region, we have created separate indexes for them for ease of use.

There is no universal consensus on the common names used for many species of animals and plants, and to add to the confusion one common name may refer to a few different species depending on the location! We have used what we believe to be the most popular common names, but if you cannot locate your animal or plant on the index, then search the list of scientific names (the scientific name can usually be found by doing a search for your common name on a popular search engine such as Google, or try searching this site as we list most common names on the individual page for the species - a search box is located at the bottom of each page for your convenience). Each list has the corresponding common or scientific name listed beside it. If you still can't locate your animal or plant, we may not have a photograph of it on the site yet - please help us expand the site by submitting photographs (see guidelines under Contact Us) and information (we may also expand this site to all regions worldwide in the future, so if you want to submit photos and information on species not in the Asia-Pacific region please do so).

The Fauna and Flora sections have an 'Unidentified' subsection. This is where we place photographs of species we have been unable to identify. Any assistance in helping us reduce the number of 'Unidentifiables' would be greatly appreciated!

Protected Areas & Resource Pages

The Protected Areas are sorted by country and listed alphabetically, no matter if they happen to be a national park, marine reserve, wildlife sanctuary, etc. We provide as much information as possible on the area, including species lists, maps, transportation, facilities, permits, dos & don'ts, links to official websites, etc.

With our resource pages, we hope to provide valuable information, tips and advice on matters related to wildlife photography, ecofriendly tourism guidelines, conservation societies, travel and logistics. We also have a list of reference websites and books. Visitors who have their own website related to the topics found on this website may request to exchange links.

Our mission is to create the best, one-stop photographic reference site on all things related to the ecology of the Asia-Pacific region. Maintaining and expanding this website is a huge task and demands constant attention. You can help support this site by buying great products from our online store, purchasing a print or making a donation. We welcome input from anyone, amateur and professional alike, so please feel free to submit your photographs of any species not already on the site (see guidelines under Contact Us). Proper credit will be given to authors, and although we regret we cannot pay for use on this site of images submitted, we will redirect any third party enquires about such images to their authors in accordance with our Image Usage Policy. Likewise, we welcome any input on any of the information provided on this website, such as correcting or updating details on Protected Areas, etc.. This website is a work constantly in progress, so some sections may not be online at present but please bookmark the site and check back in the future.

Finally, we always welcome feedback of any type, positive or negative or suggestive! Please feel free to email us with your comments.

Caveat: While we make every effort to identify species accurately, no user of this website should assume that every photograph is identified correctly and should not rely totally on this website alone as a reference source. By using this website you agree to the Terms and Conditions.
